Music acts as a medium by which we might experience the presence of God. To that end, First Church of Christ is extraordinarily blessed to have the type of music leadership that helps us lift our spirits high.

Floyd Corson, organist at the First Church of Christ, CongregationalOrganist, pianist FLOYD WHITTIER CORSON: Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Music, the University of Massachusetts at Westfield. Prior to being asked to join the faculty at the University, Floyd was appointed Director of Music at Tantasqua Regional Junior/Senior High School in Sturbridge, MA immediately following his graduation from Boston University.  While in Sturbridge, he was a frequent accompanist for Massachusetts All-Sate and District High School Choral Festivals. He, also, was Singing Master at Old Sturbridge Village from 1960 – 1976 conducting many concerts at the Village and in Boston with the Old Sturbridge Village Singers.  In 1961, Floyd conducted The Old Sturbridge Village Singers in a Collection of Early American Choral Music for Folkways Records.  After a nine-year tenure at Tantasqua he and his wife moved to Westfield, MA to take up his new position at MA University. Within two years at the University Floyd was asked to design a Music Education major. Following the approval of his proposed curriculum by the trustees, Floyd chaired that new major for twenty-three years until he retired in 1988. In addition to his position as Director of Music Education, he was Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music and conductor of the University Madrigal Singers. In 1974 Floyd founded the Greater Westfield Choral Association and conducted many concerts with that organization until he and his wife moved to the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire.

Floyd holds Bachelor and Master degrees from Boston University, School of Fine  Arts. Additional graduate studies were taken at the University of Hartford, Hartt College of Music, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and finally he returned to Boston University for additional graduate studies.

While pursuing his degrees at Boston University, he completed requirements for a minor in Church Music Ministries. Since his high school days, Floyd has served several churches in Massachusetts as organist/choir master: Merrimac, Boston, Southbridge, Springfield & Westfield. He currently continues his long tenure as a church organist at The First Church of Christ, Congregational in North Conway, NH.

During his time in the Mount Washington Valley Floyd has performed with various musical ensembles, the Annual Bach & Friends Festivals and accompanied numerous recitals locally and at the University of Southern Maine.

Floyd Corson, organist at the First Church of Christ, Congregational1984 Moller Pipe Organ: In 2006 the membership of First Church of Christ approved a major upgrade and modernization project of its 1984 pipe organ. David E. Wallace, Pipe Organ Builders of Gorham, ME was contracted to undertake the rebuilding job. The project was proposed in three steps: I Great Division, II Swell Division and III Console. Work included new windchests, new pipe work, total solid state relay controls and reconfiguration of the console making it compatible with all upgrades made in the organ chamber. The organ project was completed in June of 2013 and the rebuilt instrument was dedicated during the morning worship service on October 26, 2014.

Please come and join Our Choir if you like to sing.. The choir comes in all shapes and sizes. Some members do not read music, but they learn quickly.

Presently the adult choir with up to 14 voices sings at Sunday Services and some special services. The choir sings from September to June. New members are always welcome. Rehearsals are at 8:45am on Sunday mornings and also on Thursday evenings when announced.

We also have a Hand Bell Choir. The choir has performed at Christmas and Palm Sunday and is looking for more members to increase the repertoire of music that can be performed. Speak to any of the staff or choir members who can give you up to date information.

Director of Chancel Choir & Handbell Choirs: Anne Whittier Polak:
Anne W. Corson Polak is a life-long, music lover, especially of sacred music. Her musical roots are strong, being the daughter of 2 music educators (Floyd Corson is dad!). Although not a musician by degree, (although not her degree, she was a music education major for a bit at UMASS/Amherst), Anne has had numerous opportunities and environments to lead music experiences. She has fulfilled the roles of music teacher for a private kindergarten, hand-bell and chancel choir director for the RAF Chicksands Air force Base Protestant Chapel in England. She also directed the children’s choir there. Anne has also fulfilled the role of music director for the Christian Youth Conference in Ocean Park, ME for over 30 years. In addition to directing and singing, Anne plays the flute, guitar and a little piano. The love of music has been a special bonding element for our multi-generational family. Anne’s daughter, Julia Edwards (who also supports the music program at First Church) is a music teacher and a member of Bold Riley, a local acoustic, folk band . Anne’s other daughter, Sara Handspicker, lives in Florida and is a dancer/performer and also sings.

In her ‘non-music’ world, Anne is a licensed mental health clinician in the state of Maine. She lives in Bridgton, with her husband Frank and works both for Tri-County Mental Health Services providing school-based counseling for students in the Fryeburg school district and has a small, private practice.

Anne began her directing at First Church in September of 2013, with the Chancel Choir. In the spring of 2015, a 3-octave set of Schulmerich Hand-bells was purchased and the bell choir was born! We welcome any and all to join either (or both) choirs at any time. No previous musical experience is required. All you need is a love for making beautiful sound to enrich the worship experience.

We recently have been able to augment our music program through the talents of The Rev. Kent Schneider who has written anthems, performed as a jazz trumpeter, and has added his trumpet to the Sunday music on more than one occasion.

During the summer months, individual guest or member artists provide special music each week. This may include, flute, clarinet, trumpet, solo voice duets, and even guest choruses. As you can see we feel that music is one of God's creative gifts to his people. We try to use God's gift to praise Him, to honor Him, and to relate to Him as his very grateful children.
